Impatiens balsamina

Impatiens balsamina is an annual herb and ornamental plant in the family Balsaminaceae. It is native to Assam, India and Myanmar. The plant is commonly known as balsam, garden balsam, rose balsam, touch-me-not or spotted snapweed. The other common names are (in Assamese) ডেমডেউকা, ডামডেউকা , কেৰুফুল, Damdeuka, Keruphul, (in Hindi) Gul-mehndi, (in Kannada) Karna kundala Gowri hoo, (in Malayalam) Tilo-onapu, (in Manipuri) Khujang lei, (in Marathi) Chirdo, Terada, (in Nepali) Tiuree, Tiraa-miraa, Padake, (in Sanskrit) Tairini , (in  Tamil) Aivartenkittumpai, Aivartyenki, (in Telugu) Chilaka mukka puvvu, kaasithummi, Kasi tummi, (in Urdu) Gul-mehndi , etc.

This annual herb grows 50-90 cm tall. Stems are erect, reddish or green, succulent, simple or branched, sparsely pubescent when young or glabrous, rootstock fibrous. Arrangement of leaves of Impatiens balsamina are alternate, shape is variable lanceolate-elliptic to oblanceolate, margins is serrate and apex is acute to acuminate. Flowers are solitary or 2-3 in axillary fascicles and colour rose or white. Flowers are complete, bisexual. Flowering and Fruiting time is March to October.

Impatiens balsamina is used in traditional medicines. Juice from leaves is used in skin disorders, warts and snakebites and flowers are applied to burns. In some traditional medicine it used to treat rheumatism and fractures.
