Assam is a state of the North Eastern part of India. The state of Assam is situated in between 24°08′10″ N and 27°58′15″N latitudes and 89°42′05″E and 96°01′14″E longitudes. The area of the state is 78,738sq.Km. Topographically the state can be divided in to three parts viz the Brahmaputra valley, the Barak valley and the mountainous Assam Ranges. The state has subtropical climate with temperature ranging from 5°C to 32°C and mean annual rainfall varying from 1,500 mm to 3,750 mm. The recorded forest area of Assam is 26,832 sq km. The State of Assam is a constituent unit of the Eastern Himalayan Biodiversity Region. Assam is a biodiversity “Hot Spot”.
Favourable geographical location, diversified topography and ideal climatic conditions have made Assam very rich in biodiversity. The vegetation of Assam is primarily of tropical type covering areas of evergreen, semi-evergreen, grasslands, deciduous forests, grasslands and riverside forests.
